The Hephaestus Project was begun at Pensacola Junior College in 1996 as an attempt to promote classical learning on the Internet. It consisted of 2 projects:
1) Bellum Troianum [by Justin Kimberlin] -The Trojan War Archive Project was an attempt to tie all of the art and literature that is public domain on the Internet together in one place.
2) Dramatis Personae [by Jonathan Waugh] – This was an attempt to index all of the characters in all of the Greek/Roman Dramas so that one could find all instances of a character or god.
Of these 2 only The Trojan War Archive project is available yet. I would like to thank the following from Pensacola Junior College for their help in The Trojan War Archive Project: Jonathan Waugh (Dramatis Personae and the Hephaestus Project), Dr. Charles Schuler (Department Head of History, Languages, and Philosophy), Heather Kish (Mythology and Art History) and the Muse League (especially Megan – inspiration and encouragement).
- Justin Kimberlin
Why the name Hephaestus? Hephaestus was the Greek God of the forge. He was a creator, a technology god. This is the closest that we have to a computer god from Greco-Roman mythology. This project was named after him to symbolize the union between classical mythology and technology. Other patron gods of computers include Prometheus who gave fire to mankind, and in the Norse, Loki who often gave technology to men.

ABOUT THE FOUNDERS
Justin Kimberlin, A.A., Member of: Phi Alpha Theta (History Honor Society), USF Classics Club, PJC Muse League – He became involved in classics in 1996 when he took course in Humanitees of the Ancient World from Dr. Schuler and a course in English Lit. to 1600 at Pensacola Junior College. After earning an A.A. Degree with a heavy emphasis on classics and history on May 3, 1996, he became more involved in classics, took 2 Latin courses and joined a classics organization called the Muse League just before leaving for Tampa, Florida in August 1997. He has been involved involved with several online projects since 1992. He was involved with the foundation (testing and developement) of PJC West Online BBS and was the System Operator from 1993 to its demise in 1996. He was a computer lab assistant from 1992 to 1997. He is currently a history major and a student of mythology, theology, philosopy, literature, and the classics at the University Of South Florida in Tampa. His specialty areas are Roman studies, Norse Viking Age studies, Celtic studies, and IT (computer networks, operating systems, and mulitmedia).
Jonathan Waugh, MCSE, CCNA, A.A. – He was a computer lab manager for a Pensacola Junior College campus for many years. He was the System Operator of Starbase BBS and was also a founder of PJC West Online BBS and one of its System Operators from its foundation in 1992 to its demise in 1996. Jonathan was one of the founders of PJCNet and later SubSpaceNet. He has been involved involved with several online projects since 1992. He is an IT specialist (communications, multimedia and network specialist on IBM PC platforms). He also specializes in music and Classical literature.
PJC West Online BBS was an early online bulletin board system founded at the Pensacola Junior College Warrington Campus by David Dunson and Jonathan Waugh. After David’s departure in May 1993, Justin took over as System Operator with Jonathan Waugh as Co-System Operator. With the exception of a brief period where Mike Dunson acted as a third System Operator Justin and Jonathan ran the system until its demise from a hard drive crash in 1996. This was then replaced by an internet-based Linux server that held the Hephaestus Project which was later taken down and moved to non-PJC websites.
PJCNet was an early communication system set up by David Dunson, Jonathan Waugh, and several local System Operators in Pensacola. This was shut down by the administration after a student left a threatening message on the system.
SubSpaceNet was the replacement for the short-lived PJCNet. Set up by Jonathan Waugh as a replacement for the fallen PJCNet, this system was completely independant of PJC.
